This is a sample of some of the projects I undertook as the Assistant Director & Curator of the Cincinnati Type & Print Museum.
One of my first projects at the CT&PM was to redesign the way the front room of the museum was laid out. The goal was to create interpretive displays and exhibits that told a more concise and historically accurate narrative.
Before
After
As part of redesigning how the museum was physically laid out, I also restructured museum tours to include more personal demonstrations and hands-on experiences.
One of the challenges of the museum's physical building was that there was no way to bring larger printing equipment into the space. I remedied this by having a new garage door installed where a single door once was. I did all the demolition and framing myself, and then had the company install the actual garage door.
One unique challenge of a printing museum is moving the heavy equipment from various locations to our space. This often requires creative solutions and expert help. The museum's largest press is 10 feet long, 5 feet wide, and weighs almost 8,000 pounds. Our furthest trip was to New York City, which was over 800 miles.
As a fairly new entity, one of my goals is to increase awareness of our museum in the community. I developed a program where I will take a press to local events, and print small items such as bookmarks.
During the COVID-19 (Coronovirus) outbreak of 2020 I put together a couple craft videos that could be shared on Facebook while the museum was closed and Ohio was under a Shelter in Place order. These were filmed on my front porch with a cell phone camera, so they are not the best quality. They did, however, serve their purpose in a trying time.
Paper Making
We know everyone is probably getting tired of being at home, so we thought we would make a couple videos with some print related crafts you can try. The first video is on paper making. We hope you enjoy this craft and let us know how it goes.
Foam Printing Blocks
Many of our printing blocks at the museum are made of carved wood or linoleum. In our second craft video, we will show you how to make your own printing blocks using foam. Give it a try and let us know how it goes.
